The Thing About Change

How often does a person actually think seriously about why they do something?  Exercise, get a tattoo, take a bath, redecorate their house, dye their hair, buy a movie, put on make up.

I could list millions of specific things, but I'm going to talk about a root point: Change.

First, I need to make sure you understand that I'm talking about change itself; the decision to make change.  I am not talking about any specific kind of change.  Properly understanding the following statement depends on understanding that difference.

The only reason you have to change something is that you dislike the way it is.

So, whenever you decide to change something, take a moment to ask yourself, what exactly is wrong with the way it is now?

But if you want to go further, try something I call following the whys.  State what you want to do, have done, or are currently doing, and ask yourself why you want to, have done, or are currently doing it.  Answer yourself, and then ask why, again, to that answer.  With every answer you give yourself, keep asking why.

If you do this, and take it seriously, you may discover some very surprising things about yourself, some of which you may not like.  Undoubtedly there will be some people who would stop before facing less than appealing things about themselves.

It's been my experience that most people would rather avoid facing their flaws than learning to correct them.  Some people don't even want to really acknowledge that they have any.

  So, what's wrong with you?

I have a saying: "Creation is the child of discontent".  It's pretty much just another way of saying what I said earlier about the reason to change something.  Creation is change.  Change is creation.  Creation and destruction are two sides of the same coin.  You can't have one without the other.

So when you decide to change something, consider both sides of that coin.  What about this new thing makes you want it created, but also, what is it about the thing you're destroying that makes it unworthy of existing?

And what is it about you that has caused you to decide it is unworthy?

  Follow the whys.
