Burning Feather
September 9, 2004

Here's a peculiar one.  It's actually two, back to back, and it's the second one that is of more interest, but the end of the first one has a similarity that may be important.

The first one was supposed to be a Saturday Morning cartoon; specifically, a Japanese import, though this particular cartoon doesn't actually exist (to my knowledge).  I don't really remember the point of the cartoon, but the main male character was traveling in some kind of open landscape, and some kind of small living creature was with him.

I didn't get a good look at the creature, but it didn't seem to be important.  BTW, it's common in Japanese kid's cartoons for characters to have some sort of creature companion; usually a small one.

The main character was going somewhere, though I don't know where, and along the way, he was met by another male character who was flying in the sky on the back of what was supposed to be a giant turkey.  While still on his way towards the main character, that guy was talking to the turkey a lot, and at one point, he said something about the turkey's name.

Somehow, they picked up the main character, and were talking, and the turkey-rider was somehow able to tell what the turkey was saying, and so the turkey told him that he wanted to be named Tinkerbell.

Now, somehow, him being named Tinkerbell was supposed to have the whole cartoon be some wild variation on a movie, however, it was not Peter Pan, so I don't know what that was all about.  Anyway, when the turkey got over a large hill, it suddenly became a normal-sized turkey, effectively dumping everyone onto the ground from about 20 feet up.  The turkey ran out of time being giant, or something.

From there, the group traveled to some place where there was an old-ish woman sitting at a desk, in the middle of a shallow river about 5 feet wide.  This woman was supposed to be a sort of caretaker of a community, in such a way that she had control over what went on, almost in a sense of being able to control reality itself by writing on some papers at her desk.

Despite this power, she was still an employee for the community.  She was always getting requests from people, but she had to act responsibly, so she was not entirely pleased with her position.

The traveling group were standing in front of her desk when a somewhat less old-ish woman came up to the lady and asked for something.  I do not remember what it was, but it was something kind of significant.  The younger old woman, then said something to the effect of that she would eventually have the older woman's job for herself.  She then left and called her Auntie.

The older woman was apparently the younger's aunt, and so the older woman's attitude about granting the request was that of someone being asked to bend the rules a little for a relative without being happy to do it.

The dream transitioned, somehow, to being real life, and of a different setting, but still with similarities.  The river was now a street, in a city, and there was a guy at the desk, specifically Sean Connery, as a character, and in front of the desk were church pews.  There were about four rows of pews; each about 15 feet long, and there were about maybe 5 different people scattered about them.

The desk was right up against the curb, and Sean Connery's character was that of a "person" who checked people into Hell.  He wrote down their names, and told them what punishment they were assigned, though none of this was actually happening at the moment.

I was sitting in the first pew, and the whole thing was supposed to be part of a movie.  An adult male main character came to the pews and sat down on the second row.  I don't think he was a cop, but he did have that air about him.  He began talking to Connery about something.

I wish I could recall specifics, but all I can remember is that it had to do with behavior, and at some point, Connery corrected the man in regards to something which Connery's job gave him first-hand knowledge that the other man would not have.

But here's the curious part: While all that was happening, I found a long feather sitting beside me.  The feather was about a foot long, about an inch and a half wide, and was a gray/white blend.  I picked up the feather and was "flapping" it in the air, in front of my face, to see what kind of sound it made.

A thing to note is that in real life, some years ago, I saw something on TV about birds, and a man "flapped" some feathers to illustrate the use of the shape of a feather.  When he flapped the owl feather, it made no sound at all: owls being night hunters and relying on stealth.

In the dream, I was working with that real-life memory in mind.  I basically wanted to see how quiet the feather was.  During the course of the two men's discussion, and after I was done "flapping", I held the feather in front of me and somehow set it on fire.

I did not really do anything mentally or physically to set it on fire, but at the same time, it still felt somehow within my realm of control.  I watched the feather burn down, and while the tiniest of flames were on their way to extinction, at the bottom, I dropped the feather on the seat.

I thought the flame, if you could still call it that, would got out, but it caught a little fire on the cushion upholstery.  It burned a hole about 3 inches long and a little over an inch wide before I patted it out.  I was in an oops state of mind when Connery looked at me, and then I woke up.
