One Of Those Things
She called me up after midnight
Said come and howl with me
Said I told the moon to expect my call
some time around two or three

So I put on my shoes and closed the door
Looked at the moon so full above
It lit up the night so bright with its glowin'
it was the perfect night for love

I met her at the cliff on the shoreline
Standing on the edge in her best black howling clothes
Across my shirt her hands started moving down
then she said we won't be needing those

The air was so cool under the moon that night
Saltwater fresh on the breeze
When we finally got to howlin' at the moon that night
she had me down on my knees

She said she was leaving for New Orleans
Said she had to do some important things
Don't know if I can make it back, but I'll tell you this
I'll be waiting for the phone to ring

She put her necklace in my hand then walked away
Said enjoy all the luck it's gonna bring
I called to her why does it have to be this way
and she stopped long enough to say it's just one of those things

The next morning I watched from 'round the corner
Loading her car her sad face looked so sweet
But it changed when she saw the necklace on her mirror
and my suitcases in her back seat

She turned to see me standing right behind her
I told her I would leave it all behind
What good would all the luck ever do me
if there was no happiness to find

She asked how could I just leave it all behind me
How could I just give up so many dreams
I jumped in the front seat of her convertible
and smiled and said it's just one of those things

So it's midnight on the road to New Orleans
No one's around and the night is so nice and cool
Over the engine the moon should be gettin'
a call from two laughin' howlin' fools
This poem was inspired by, and sort of written to, the song, "Tunnel Of Love", by Dire Straits.
