Boston Legal and the Law

I just watched an episode of Boston Legal.  I really enjoy the show, but it seems to just further expose how much stupidity there is in the courts, an probably not in the way in which it has intended, if it has even intended at all.

In the episode I just saw, a man accused of polygamy was on trial, and a jury was there to determine whether or not he was guilty.

First of all, no one at all denied that he was a polygamist.  He was admittedly married to both women.  The lawers spent pretty much all their time talking about statistics, the origins of the laws, and whether or not the family was negatively affected by the family situation.

What the freakin' hell does all that matter?  Polygamy is against the law, and he's silmultaneously married to two women.  He's guilty.  Period.  End of story.  Why did it even go to trial?  They didn't need a jury to determine guilt.

What's a guy going to do?  Admit to being married to two women at the same time and plead not guilty to polygamy charges?  This isn't philosophical court.

The only thing the courtroom would be need for that was more than just a formality would be sentencing: deciding what punishment, if any, he would receive.

Meanwhile, back in real life, why is it that so many people think it's okay for laws to be written or changed in a courtroom?  The courtroom deals with already existing laws.  If you want a law changed, the courtroom is not the place to do it.

The other case in the episode was a mother sueing a video game company because her 15 year old son played it for 36 hours without eating or sleeping and died of heart failure.

I suppose I should mention that they were saying the company intentionally made the game addictive, as if that somehow removes responsability from the son or the mother that was insufficiently involved in her sons life.

There's always somebody looking to lay the blame somewhere besides the place it starts.  Yourself.  You make your choices, and you get your consequences.  There's plenty of blame that can go around, but always start with yourself.

Just accept the universal truth that anything can happen anytime and anywhere.  Just how prepared your are is up to you.  Deal with it.
