Penny Dreadful

So, I finally got around to watching a movie called Penny Dreadful.  It was on Sci-Fi Channel, and it was one of the "8 movies to die for".

I can't say the movie entirely sucked, because there were some elements of it that I liked.  I liked that the killer was a female.  I like that Penny ended up turning the tables on her, to an extent.  Sadly, these were all rendered incidental.  Even her overcoming her fear of cars was made an afterthought.

No, the majority of the movie was boring, although I'm sure the people who made the movie thought they were being suspenseful, or something else that ultimately amounts to nothing actually happening.  I gots news for you: suspense is suspense only when something scary is going on.

Then there's the completely dumbass things some of the characters did.

So, you're walking down the road, trying to get a signal to call 911.  You finally get a signal.  What do you do?

  A. Stop right there and talk to the person.

  B. Keep walking... losing the signal... and then don't bother to go back to the spot where you had a signal.

You're trapped in a car, someone calls you, but the signal is weak.  They hang up, but you try to call them back.  What do you do?

  A. Move around the vehicle, trying to get a better signal, specifically near windows.

  B. Sink down in near the floor of the vehicle and stay there.

You're trapped in a car, but you hear a horn honking randomly in the distance.  You want to get their attention.  What do you do?

  A. Honk your horn.

  B. Roll down the window and shout.

And then there's the bit that just wouldn't happen.  At least I think so.  Maybe I'm wrong.  You tell me.

You're a killer hiding under a car.  Some dude, trying to free your trapped prey, is now standing right in front of the car.  You quickly reach out and stab him in the foot, he yells, and then you grab his ankles.

I'd like you to tell me exactly how you manage to pull him down AND completely under the car in about 1 second?  Keep in mind that even though you are a clichéd escaped mental patient, you are still just a human being.

Yes, there were a few moments where I was actually interested enough in what was happening that I wasn't wishing I could fast forward through it.  I was transferring it to tape for my sister, by the way.  That's why I couldn't fast forward through it.

Anyway, that's my movie review of Penny Dreadful (horrorfestonline.com), one of the "8 movies to die for" of the After Dark Horrorfest.

In gathering links, I discover that there are three movies called Penny Dreadful (Amazon.com)2005, 2006, and 2007.  All three different premises.
