Last Person On Earth

Often, after I've spent a substantial period of time in thought, I like to backtrack and look at my train of thought. I like to see the difference between where it started and where it ended and what steps it took along the way.

Today, I don't remember exactly where it started, but the earliest thing I do remember was something I heard Iggy Pop say about being punk.

I do not recall his exact words, but he expressed mild disapproval of the stereotypical punkster at a concert who would bag on some guy in "non-punk" (my word, not his) clothes and tell him that his clothes were not "punk". Iggy ended saying that anything can be "punk".

I then started thinking about what "punk" might be. I've never seen or heard it defined (that I can recall), but after some thought, it seems like "punk" is basically non-conformist, but in intent, as opposed to actual result.

You're doing, or in this case, wearing what you want to for your own reasons, and not simply because someone else is expecting you to.

Even a suit and tie can be punk. It's all in why you're wearing it.

Then I started thinking about peoples' choices of clothing.

I often like to strip things down and find the core of an issue. Typically, this comes down to the caveman, but in this instance, I asked the question, What if you were the last person on Earth?

This is not a zombie apocalypse. It's not Night of the Comet. It's not The Rapture or some rampant disease.

Simply, what if every human on the planet, except you, just suddenly disappeared?

What clothes would you wear? Would you keep wearing the kind of clothes that you do? Would you bother wearing clothes at all, weather permitting?

What about your shoes?

What style choices have you been making for the sake of other people, either to appease or impress them?

Personally, I'm pretty practical as it is, so there would not be much difference for me. I suspect my changes would have more to do with being a bit more suited to my new lifestyle, so I might wear pants/shorts that are more comfortable. I'm just guessing, though.

I'm already a basic t-shirt and jeans guy. I would probably keep wearing combat-style boots, though if I could find some that zip up, instead of lace up, then I might go that way.

I have a feeling that the biggest changes would be for the females, generally speaking.

Let's say that before everyone else disappeared, someone had invented an automatic tattooing machine that could give you any tattoo that you could want and it would look perfect.

If you are a person who wants a tattoo while everyone is on the planet, would you still want to get it after everyone is gone?
