Spirit Window

Today I had one of my coolest dreams ever.

It took place in my deceased grandfather's house, but secluded to the guest bedroom and the hallway.

At least two of my immediate family were in the dream, though they were not themselves.  I know my father was there, and I think one of my sisters, but it was not too clear, or I just don't remember well, because the dream was the first one I had, and I had a few other clear ones after.

In fact, I can already tell that I don't recall the complete tale, anymore, so I'll do the best I can.  I think I'll get further starting with the premise of what was going on.

According to this dream, when someone died, and their spirit left them, it traveled through a sort of rectangular window about the size of a medicine cabinet.

This window was on the side of an invisible and non-physical four-sided pillar.

When someone died, their spirit would go through this window, and then they would be met by the last person they knew who died, and that person would guide them, so they would not end up in limbo, because the newly dead person is disoriented and confused.

The thing is, though, that I could sort of call the spirit back to the body, if I wanted to.  I had that connection to the other side, which was why I could see it all to begin with.

Someone in the guest bedroom had been knocked unconscious, or something, and later died, though they should not have.

In the dream, if you're unconscious then sometimes your spirit can try to wander, because you're not awake to exhibit control and have that awareness on the physical world.

When the spirit accidentally slips out and tries to pass on before time, then I have to call it back.

One of the cool things about the dream is that I was actually able to experience what the spirit was experiencing through the process of being called back.

I don't know, or perhaps remember, exactly how it was that I called spirits back, but doing so would first grab the attention of that last spirit I mentioned who serves as a guide.

That spirit would have guided the new one onward unless I had called, and even if a spirit has been guided onward, there is still some time to recall it, as long as the body can still receive it.

When a spirit first passes through the window, they end up in a sort of, I don't know, waiting area.  It's not a room, because there are no actual walls, but anything beyond it is not visible because of what only seems like a white, smoky fog.

In this area, the spirit has no sense of direction, and is barely capable of intelligent thought.  Left alone, they would move about like a fish along the glass of an aquarium, reacting only by the extreme bare minimum of instinct, until they just happened to manage to leave the area and end up stuck in limbo.

When guiding a spirit onward, it's no trouble at all.  The guide just sort of holds the shoulders lightly and points them the right way.

However, it would be against the spirit's nature, in a manner of speaking, to go back the way they came.  That direction is behind them and no longer of consequence.  For all intents and purposes, it no longer exists to them.

When the spirit must return, the guide has to speak to the spirit and sort of wake it up.

When the spirit passes onward, it automatically regains awareness, but in this waiting area they are basically dumb.  When a spirit is being called back, then the guide must work to reawaken them prematurely.

I was able to experience this sense of being reawakened.

You start out eyes wide and oblivious, reacting totally on that bare instinct for movement, and then you start to hear fragments of a voice speaking to you.  It's like when you're on a cell phone that is breaking up a lot.

The guide does not "touch" the spirit when doing this, though I don't know why, but the guide has to snap the spirit out of it before they accidentally transverse themselves into limbo.

Eventually, the spirit regains enough awareness to understand what it is they are supposed to do.

For some reason, the spirit has to circle the pillar once, in a certain direction, before going back through the window.  It seemed like it was some sort of reversing action that would allow them to return to their bodies.

I remember, in part of the dream, that there was one person whose spirit wandered, and no guide was waiting.  I THINK that was the situation where I sort of became the spirit.  I THINK I had to sort of mentally blend with the spirit and talk it back myself.  As I said, aspects are fuzzy since this was the first dream of the night.
